by Christina Dominique-Pierre

We are grabbing hold of the opportunity to Encourage storytelling through art with our author in residence, Trevor Lai, author, illustrator, and entrepreneur who has published more than 25 books for readers of all ages. He is also the founder and CEO/creative director of UP Studios, which was named by Animation magazine as one of the Top 25 Animation Companies in the world. He has also designed over 80 hotels with his #1 animated character, Super BOOMi and dozens of statues towering up to 10 meters tall for expositions across China. Mr. Lai published his first book, Ralphy the Rhino, at the age of 17 and has since taken the world by storm with the creation of his characters Piggy, Tomo, and Super BOOMi.

Through these characters, Mr. Lai tells visual stories about adventure, friendship, perseverance, problem solving, creativity, and encouragement. Throughout this week, he has taken our Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 students through the adventures of all of his characters with a focus on the animation process! From teaching them about the power of imagination through the process of storyboarding and 3D modeling to Animation, he helped our students understand the process of getting ones idea into something 2 or 3 dimensional.

Students have been encouraged to create and tell visual stories in workshops with Mr. Lai, explorations with peers, hands-on storytelling in creation labs, experiencing “Meet Concordia’s Artists,” and so much more!

This weeklong adventure could not have been complete without an interview with Mr. Lai, by our Grade 1 student, Cruz Mendes. Cruz spent a few minutes capturing the imagination and “What’s Next” for our author in residence. We even heard a possible future BOOMi Theme Park! It is exciting to know that even our youngest learners are taking part in sharing the skills, talents, and crafts of our artists with our community and beyond. I Encourage you to join in on the stories being created and shared throughout this week.
