Writers Supporting Writers: HS Writing Club Promotes Skills and Creativity

Writing is a way of recording details of life but also a way of expressing self and identity. Some within the Concordia community have pursued their passion for writing to the next level by creating a special group to promote and inspire writers.
In Ficticity Writing Club, leaders Henie Zhang and Faith created a venue for their members to fully explore their interest and skills in literary composition. These dynamic leaders say that their intention for development of the writing club is born out of a personal passion: “We love creative writing! We wanted to provide a platform for students to both express their passions and receive constructive peer feedback. We hope to craft meaningful products as well as pique student interest in the art.”
Henie and Faith explain that members of the club are introduced to different styles and techniques of writing, which they may not be able to touch upon in daily life. The club is also an opportunity to connect with other writers throughout school and publish multiple projects. But mostly, the members enabled to enjoy creating works of writing that they can call their own.
Ms. Eileen Beckman, teacher of AP Language and Composition, deserves generous credit for inspiring her students in the creative writing realm. She encourages daily discipline by prompting her students with relevant topics at the start of each class. After the journal time has passed, students will first share amongst partners or peers, then one or two people per time will share in front of the class. “This will allow the students to practice style and timed writing,” explains Ms. Beckman, “which will benefit them both on the actual AP exam and regular creative writing.”
Ms. Beckman also believes that Concordia leans to the more STEM-centric, meaning there may be the perception of less attention devoted to literature and writing. Journals provide more secure opportunities for students to think outside the box and voice selves through literary expression. In addition, she considers journaling to be a safe platform for developing social awareness. By sharing with others, students can interact with different perspectives that they might not have encountered previously. Ms. Beckman hopes that meaningful classroom work can spill out into students’ lives, sparking their creativity and empathy.
It may be true that passion fuels actions and inspirational thinking. Literary composition allows individuals to explore their inner lives, discover unique communication styles and, at the same time, to develop social awareness and a more sensitive global perspective. Through the sincere efforts of Concordia teachers and peers, students have many chances to extend their writing skills and develop work that is worthy of sharing.
