Concordia & Dulwich College partner to launch city-wide Service and Sustainability Network

The first gathering of the Shanghai Service and Sustainability Network.

The first gathering of the Shanghai Service and Sustainability Network.

On March 1st, over 50 educators from Shanghai and the nearby area gathered together at Dulwich College Pudong for the inaugural meeting of the Shanghai Service and Sustainability Network. Fifteen schools were represented and it was a wonderful afternoon, full of robust conversation, learning and networking.

When service learning consultant and trainer Cathy Berger Kaye visited both campuses in the fall, she encouraged the service learning co-ordinators at Dulwich and Concordia to consider launching a city-wide network. Cathy spearheaded a similar network in Los Angeles many years ago and has seen meaningful outcomes for educators in that area. Anthony Reich, Director of Global Citizenship at Dulwich College Pudong, and LeeAnne Lavender, Service Learning Coach at Concordia International School Shanghai, loved Cathy’s idea and so did key leaders at both schools. Dulwich Head of School Caroline Taylor and Concordia Head of School Mary Scott were enthusiastic and whole-heartedly supported the partnership.

Anthony and LeeAnne spent several weeks preparing for the first gathering: sending out invitations, ordering food and business cards, engaging students in a logo design process and planning for the first gathering.

D’Arcy Lunn, who is currently serving as the Global Citizen in Residence at Dulwich, agreed to lead afternoon workshops for participating educators that would deepen thinking and practices around service learning and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. His sessions were dynamic and produced thoughtful, engaged dialogue about growing service and sustainability initiatives at our schools.

Participating schools for this first session included Concordia International School Shanghai, Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong, Dulwich College Dehong, Dulwich College Minhang, Dulwich College Suzhou, Dulwich High School Suzhou, Harrow International School, Lycée Francais de Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao International School, Shanghai Pinghe School, Shanghai Livingston American School, Shanghai Shangde Experimental School, Shanghai Singapore International School, Western International School of Shanghai, Yew Chung International School of Shanghai and YK Pao School Shanghai.

The next SSSN gathering will take place at Concordia on Friday, May 3rd from 12:30 – 4:00.
